OPEN HOUSE!
This house is about to be demolished, as in, to the ground. So what does this mean for you? Well seeing as this house is to be destroyed the only better thing to do is turn it into a Creative Arts Installation piece/event .....interested?
So here are the SPECS for any possible punters.
WHEN?
The event will be taking place on the weekend of the 15th/16th/17th of July (HoLiDaYs!). Our current idea is to create one gathering, however if you would like to hold a 'season' (have your works/show displayed over a number of days) this can also be negotiated. The 'bump-in' process will be taking place from the 11th of May onwards.
WHERE?
The house is located in Sunshine, all of five minutes walk from the station and bus terminal. It's massive backyard backs onto the train line and the neighbours on either side of the house are very easygoing. There have been other big parties there in the past and there were no complaints so we are expecting a similar outcome for this arts event.
WHO?
Who you ask? Well everybody is invited to join in the fun. The main idea is for us to get collaborating and networking with other artists. There are NO pre-requisites. You just have to be pumped to get creative! The more the merrier, even if you don't really have something in particular that you would like to do but want to help out....we need you! This could also be a great opportunity for collaborations; you may just have the expertise someone desperately needs for a successful project outcome.
The idea is that this event is a blank canvas, if you have something you would like to do, we can make it work!

HOW?
Well this all depends on you really, who gets involved and what they bring to table will be the deciding factor as to how this event will be run but the current idea/s are.
The house has three bedrooms, a lounge, a bathroom (did I hear water installation?!?!?!?) and a kitchen - different projects can take over a designated part of the house best suited for their works. Currently Dave, one of our fellow students, has been designated a bedroom to build a narnia installation which will have accompanying music he will be playing.
There is a massive backyard which could be to turned into a stage/cabaret/theatre type setting (weather permitting)...the other option is to do this with the lounge....once again this depends on who gets involved and what they would like to do.
The house could start out as a gallery in the early evening. Then we could present theatre/dance/performance works, then following this, a party with live music.
Collaborate!!! If you have an idea but need other people with certain skills....we can hook you up! Currently we have a kitchen collaboration underway with visual arts, performance and music students. We are also searching for some digital/media/visual artists to collaborate with a funky ass old skool choir.
Other options are to present everything simultaneously, hold presentations the days leading up to the event, workshopping stuff together in the space. Have the house as a 'peephole' gallery where the action can be observed by the outside through windows etc.
The entire production will be documented on film from the very beginning to the very end so we will all get a chance to have permanent records of our work.

Final Folio

As we near the end of the semester I want to clarify the final presentation process. As is mentioned the unit guide, you will present your folios to the rest of the class in the 12th week of the course. When presenting your work, I will expect you to address these 3 questions, What you did, why you did it and how you did it. For example, those of you who chose to make a typology can refer back to the people in the video who used this approach and compare and contrast your own reasons against theirs for the why.

I also want you to submit to me at the end of the class a CD/DVD containing all your images that you used in your folios. If you used a post production tool in the production of your folio I want to see the files pre and post production as well.

As I have said there is going to be an exhibition of student work at the end of semester 2 and I will need to choose the work ready for this. I will e-mail those of you who are selected closer to the date with more information, but I want to be able have as much work as possible to choose from.

Exhibition opportunity.

At the end of semester 2, there will be an exhibition of student photography work from this subject this year, at the gallery on level 17 on the Flinders st Campus.

Selected portfolios will be projected for the duration of the exhibition which will run for about 3 weeks at the end of semester 2. More information towards the end of Semester.

Here are the details regarding the projection/exhibition at VISY hub.

Visy hub Harvester Road Sunshine, 7:00pm 12th of November to 15th of November 2010.

We will congregate for a short period around 7:00pm at the Building and watch the projection; then ajourn to the Derrimut Hotel across the railway lines

What this ultimately means is, you will need a lot of images to work with on class, please bring all the images you have made so far for this semester to class this week.

Well done to all who turned out on what nearly was a wet rainy grey day.

I learnt several things on the day, it seems that there is no photography permitted in the Footscray Market at all, also that there are far more err, illegal activities going on than I originally thought.

Please bring all your images to the next class. We will begin to learn how to organise and sort our images next.

Weather Watching

Great the e-mails a flying in, keep them coming folks, and don't forget to treat them like a visual diary, you can list ideas, inspiration etc to keep us all informed of your progress?

Next week we will be going for a photo-stroll. The 'brief' will be uploaded ready for you to download in the next day or so. We meet at 9:30, on the Footscray market side of Footscray train station. Try and organise a school camera in advance, if not then, bring what ever you have, and if you are new to the camera, please bring the instruction manual as well.

Keep in mind some of the points made in the documentary we watched this week, regarding the meaning and context of photographs.

Final Folios

We are now at the point the program where you should be working towards your final folio. I am now available each week for one to one consultations.

I would expect that most people will need to show me the results of their endeavours at least once or twice in the lead up to final folio presentations.

Final folio presentations will follow the same format as, the research presentations, i.e. we will collectively view and discuss, your results, to this end I would expect some people to be ready no later than week 10, so we can get through all students in every class.

Please keep blogging your progress and ideas, I am very impressed with the standard of work being done, as I was with the presentations.

Finally; email me directly if I have not left a comment on your blog yet, I have 3 classes of approximately 20 students, and it is not easy for me to get around to everyone's blogs every week. In the process I may have missed some people's blogs, so please make sure I know the address of your blog.

Get Involved WYPIN

The Western Young People's Independent Network (WYPIN) is running a photography project for young people in the Western region. Are you interested to learn about photography? Would you like to tell a story through photos about issues that are important to you? Then get involved in the WYPIN PHOTOGRAPHY PROJECT!

What is the photography project?

This program is delivered by the Western Young People’s Independent Network (WYPIN.) There will be 8 workshops which will teach you how to use a camera, how to turn your ideas into pictures and how to tell a story through photos. There will be an exhibition held in Footscray to show the community your work!

Where and when?

Workshops will be held during school holidays (29th June, 1st, 6th, 8th of July) and 3 Saturdays (17th, 24th and 31st July.) All workshops held in Footscray.

Who can be involved?

If you are aged between 15-25 years old, from a culturally diverse background and you live in the Western region of Melbourne, you can apply to be involved!

The Guardian's culture section, a good source of information about Photography, has this interesting article about an image of teenage girls taken in the mid 80's, by, Lauren Greenfield.

This assignment led directly to my Girl Culture project: a set of photographs through which I saw that the body had become the primary expression of identity for girls and women, and explored the devastating effects of that. I went into Girl Culture with an open mind, and I came out with a feminist perspective. I am a documentarian, interested in sociological issues – but I'm not a passive observer, or a fly on the wall.

Read as much as you can about the photographer/genre/photograph/movement/style that makes an impression on you; and present these research results back to the class.You may use Preview or Powerpoint to present images, 'Talk' about photographer/genre/photograph/movement/style you have chosen as well and what you have learned about the photographer/genre/photograph/movement/style in the process.

Our first class Photoshop assignment seems to be have been a great success. Please post your versions to the DFAP pool on flickr as soon as possible. Monday's group don't panic we will talk about this in class this week.

Blogs, Flickr and other issues?

Just to clarify, your blog is in essence a visual diary, it should contain, ideas, inspiration, links to images or actual images you like, song lyrics, or any material you consider inspirational, you can even embed video and mp3s. Flickr, is however is about photography, and talking to other people including each other about photography, technical conceptual aesthetic, philosophical any and all aspects of photography, just talk and show your work.

Welcome to DFAP @ VU

DFAP, or Digital Fine Art Photography is a new subject so I've set up this blog. This is one of several places where we will learn and share ideas and inspirations about our photographic portfolios.

A requirement of the unit is too use a blog to track your own progress and ideas throughout the semester. Once set up, these will be linked in the sidebar on the right. We will do this in class, I require a dedicated blog for this, no facebook or other social sites please.

You will also need to create a flickr account, a free one will suffice. Once you have done this, join the dedicated group I have set up on flickr and two others groups, write about them on your blog. The dedicated group has some links for your to explore already on it's discussion page. Submit images to your 3 groups often. Demonstrate to me your involvement with this online community by sharing links to favourite images and photographers on your blog or in the pool on flickr as well.

I have posted some readings on a more permanent location. Download them and use them to as part of research into the uses and meaning of Photography in the 21st century.

I have also built a repository of useful links on a site called diigo.com, please feel free to comment share or discuss here, on diigo, or flickr, any and all concerns you have about your Digital Fine Art Folio, or indeed the idea, history or practice of digital fine art photography.

Photojournalism, Place & Ethics.

Haiti's recent natural disaster has reignited some debate about Photojournalism's function and uses, read the following blog entries for some thought provoking ideas about photojournalism and culture's use of photography.

On the surface Photojournalism is the antithesis to Fine Art Photography, but this is something we will explore throughout the semester. The line, between documentary and Art, appears to have been considerably blurred for several years now.
